New Jersey Together Statement
"New Jersey Together extends our deep appreciation to Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill for her vision in nominating Commissioner Victoria Kuhn to continue her transformative work," says Jessica Brater, New Jersey Together. "By choosing an experienced leader with a proven track record of reform, the Governor-elect is sending a clear message that the incoming administration views rehabilitation and community reintegration as essential pillars of New Jersey's public safety.
New Jersey Together has witnessed first-hand Commissioner Kuhn's steadfast commitment to bettering incarcerated people, corrections officers and formerly incarcerated people. For too long, the barrier between "inside" and "outside" New Jersey's corrections system has hindered the successful return of incarcerated individuals to their communities. Commissioner Kuhn has spent her tenure systematically tearing down barriers and building a "corrections community."
Her level of collaboration, accountability and transparency is unmatched. Her leadership has transformed the NJDOC from a siloed institution into a collaborative partner that actively works with reentry providers to ensure formerly incarcerated individuals are better prepared for success when they return to their community."
Afiliated with the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), NJ Together is a broad-based, multi-faith citizen power organization in New Jersey. Strictly non-partisan, the Industrial Areas Foundation JAE) is the nation's first and largest network of multi-faith community organizations. NJ Together challenges ordinary people in our state to identify problems facing their neighborhoods and city, connect individuals and organizations to multiply their power, and mobilize people to bring about creative and effective change.
NJ Together has been instrumental in criminal justice reform across the state to include helping pass the Fair Chance in Housing Law which bars housing providers from asking about criminal history on housing applications and ensuring incarcerated people had access to COVID testing.
Most recently, NJ Together is providing strong support of passing the Incarcerated Women's Protection Act
