New Jersey Working Families Support Central Jersey Progressive Democrats running all-women and gender-inclusive tickets

Middlesex County – Central Jersey Progressive Democrats are challenging the Middlesex County Committee by-laws that require one man and one woman to be able to run for county committee by running several all-women tickets as well as a New Jerseyan that is non-binary. In support, NJ Working Families interim director Rob Duffey said:

“We support the efforts of the Central Jersey Progressive Democratic to challenge the rule that limits Middlesex Democratic County Committee seats to one male candidate and one female candidate. The rule excludes New Jerseyans that are non-binary, gender fluid or gender diverse, and disenfranchises women in an increasingly women-run Democratic Party.

U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) once said: ‘The people closest to the pain, should be closest to the power.’ Non-binary, gender-fluid, or otherwise gender diverse New Jerseyans experience extreme rates of discrimination, abuse, and exclusion. We must make space for the voices of communities that are seeking greater political and social justice, not shut them out.

A majority of Democratic Party voters and the majority of registered Democrats are women, but men dominate New Jersey’s Democratic party leadership. That’s unfair, and it has significant implications for policy debates around universal pre-K, sexual harassment, domestic abuse, and more. We need more women in elected office to champion these issues, and we needed them yesterday.”

New Jersey Working Families is a grassroots, independent political organization fighting for a government that represents the needs and values of working families. NJWF elects candidates who share progressive values and organizes campaigns to advance racial, social, and economic justice.
