NJ Working Families Alliance Statement on Assembly Appropriations and Senate Budget Committees Passing Automatic Voter Registration Measure
Trenton– In response to the passage of the S481/A2014 in the Assembly Appropriations Committee and Senate Budget Committee, New Jersey Working Families Executive Director, Analilia Mejia, issued the following statement:
“Voting is an American principle and the cornerstone of what it means to be a citizen, however, up until now our state has not revamped its Voter Registration process in order to ensure eligible voters are brought into the electoral process. We commend S481/A2014 sponsors Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin and Senator Joseph Vitale for their foresight in not only moving to join ten other states in adopting Automatic Voter Registration, but also being proactive and progressive in creating a path towards expanding AVR, beyond the New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission to include other applicable state agencies in the future. This can be a critical factor to boost voter participation in New Jersey, and can also help reduce registration disparities that have plagued the state. We thank the Assembly Appropriations Committee and Senate Budget Committee members for hearing our call to advance policies that will help ensure New Jersey’s democracy is by and for the people.”
