NJDSC Remembers Babs Siperstein

Last week, New Jersey lost a true champion and friend. Barbra “Babs” Siperstein was a courageous and mighty activist who helped lead the fight for equality. Her tenacious spirit shined a light of hope into the darkened corners where too many of our LGBTQ brothers and sisters had been pushed, especially the transgender community.

Babs led the fight for transgender equality. She was a role model for the next generation who demonstrated through her years of perseverance how to overcome intolerance with the greater force of mutual understanding and respect.

Babs’ legacy will live on through our continued efforts to fight for equality and those of the civil rights organizations she supported, as well as through the Barbra Siperstein Endowed Scholarship at Middlesex County College. This scholarship, which Babs created in 2017, provides transgender students with the financial support they need for higher learning.

Babs was more than just a fierce advocate: she was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, spouse, partner, aunt, mentor and friend. Her memory should live on forever as a person of character and determination.
