NJWFA: NJ Democrats Redistricting Proposal Stopped Because of Grassroots Organizations Activism

Newark– After strong public opposition to New Jersey Democrats redistricting proposal to push a ballot question amendment to change the state constitution to allow legislative leaders on the redistricting committees, Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin announced their decision to not move forward with the proposal, SCR43/ACR60. New Jersey Working Families Alliance Executive Director, Analilia Mejia, issued the following statement:

“There is tremendous power when voters are engaged and informed. Senate and Assembly leadership attempted to silently move a drastic proposal many understood to be detrimental to New Jersey’s democracy. Legislative leadership’s withdrawal at the face of an informed, engaged, and active public proves that government works best with the full engagement and knowledge of the people. When we fight, we win!”
