Panel Approves Bucco Bill Assisting Drivers Facing MVC Document Expiration Deadlines

New Jersey drivers will have more time to renew Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) documents during the pandemic under legislation sponsored by Senator Anthony M. Bucco and approved today by the Senate Transportation Committee.

Under the bill, S-3300, during a state of emergency declared by the governor, a customer who is required to schedule an appointment to renew a document would have the expiration date extended automatically to the date of the appointment, allowing the driver to remain on the road.

“People shouldn’t have to park their cars for weeks because the MVC is backlogged and can’t keep up with the work volume,” said Bucco (R-25). “We have all witnessed the untenable lines and long wait-times at MVC facilities, and recently, 10 agencies were temporarily closed due to the virus. This bill would address some of the frustration and helplessness that New Jersey drivers are experiencing.”

The legislation would also remedy problems for drivers who must register inherited vehicles.

Currently, drivers have 30 days from the time of the previous vehicle owner’s death to complete registration. Under the bill, a new owner who makes an appointment for registration could legally operate the car until the date of the appointment.

“This is a temporary change necessitated by the prolonged pandemic and its impact on the Motor Vehicle Commission, which was already struggling before we ever heard of the coronavirus,” Bucco said. “It is a sensible measure that will help New Jersey drivers who have been inconvenienced enough already.”
