Pascrell Announces $3.16 Million in CARES Act Housing Grants for North Jersey

Federal funding will help New Jerseyans prevent, prepare for and respond to housing challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic

PATERSON, NJ – Today, U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) announced $3,160,920 in federal housing grants to assist families during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. These federal awards will be used by public housing authorities to help families secure safe housing and prevent the spread of COVID-19. The funding for these grants was made available by the House’s CARES Act, which Rep. Pascrell supported in March.

“We passed the CARES Act to provide federal support to the American people and to the public services helping us weather this crisis. Those services include public housing and that is why we fought so hard to secure this federal funding for New Jersey families,” said Rep. Pascrell. “While this federal support is welcomed, the need has grown since Congress passed the CARES Act. The House passed the HEROES Act in May to provide over $100 billion to address housing needs caused by this pandemic. We need a national moratorium on evictions and foreclosures and to allocate a hefty amount of federal funding to help those experiencing and at-risk of homelessness. Republicans need to come back to the negotiating table and start caring about the millions of Americans whose lives have been turned upside-down by this crisis.”

The HEROES Act would significantly expand housing relief to ensure that American families have a roof over their heads. The bill includes $100 billion in emergency rental assistance, an additional $11.5 billion to prevent outbreaks among people experiencing homelessness, and a national eviction moratorium for all renters. The bill also includes $5 billion for Community Development Block Grants, funding for 100,000 new emergency housing vouchers, more than $300 million for rural rental assistance, and additional funding for public housing and other federal housing providers.

Distributed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, these CARES Act Admin Fee Regular and Mainstream Voucher Program funds will support public housing agencies as they provide housing assistance to low-income residents served by the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program.
