Pascrell Statement on Trump’s Announcement of Tariffs
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09), Ranking Member on the Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee, released the following statement regarding President Trump’s decision to impose new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports:
“For too long, China’s cheating has hurt American workers and undermined our manufacturing base. Targeted tariffs can help bring China and other bad actors to the table to reduce overcapacity.
“At last week’s NAFTA talks, representatives from Canada and Mexico expressed concern to me that tariffs would harm their economies and our trading relationships. An across-the-board tariff against all nations – friend and foe alike – is an antidote stronger than the poison. Tariffs must seek to strengthen U.S. production and promote national security, not be used as a cudgel against our partners. We must work with our allies to confront China multilaterally and promote fair trade in which all countries play by the rules. Failure could scuttle any chance we have at reforming NAFTA for the better.”
