Passaic County Commissioner John Bartlett Calls on Governor Phil Murphy to Sign Immigrant Trust Legislation

WAYNE, NJ – County Commissioner John Bartlett, candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th District Democratic primary election, released the following statement:

“After the masked attacks on our immigrant neighbors last week at a Morristown laundromat, and amid continuing federal roundups of ordinary residents just because anonymous ICE agents suspect they’re foreign, Governor Phil Murphy has the opportunity to draw a legal and moral line in the sand.

“As a public servant representing more than 150,000 immigrants in my county, and as part of an immigrant family myself, I publicly urge Governor Murphy to sign the Safe Communities Act (A6308/S5036), the Privacy Protection Act (A6309/S5037), and the Strengthening Trust Between Law Enforcement and Immigrant Communities Act (A6310/S5038) before he leaves office.

“Our Legislature passed this package of bills to safeguard the rights of immigrant families in many of the same ways that Passaic County has since we became the first county to adopt a ‘Fair & Welcoming’ policy in 2017. In New Jersey, we stand up to bullies. Before he bids farewell next week, Governor Murphy should stand up to President Trump’s bullying, and take this necessary step towards ensuring safety and fairness for everyone in our state.”
