Patient receiving care via telehealth.
A Bold Step to Expand Access and Resist Growing Barriers to Abortion Care
NEWARK, NJ — Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan New Jersey (PPMNJ) is proud to announce the launch of medication abortion via telehealth in its Virtual Health Center. This new program expands access to abortion care by allowing patients to connect with trusted providers, receive comprehensive and unbiased information on all their options, and safely access medication abortion from the privacy of their homes.
“New Jersey residents who meet certain medical criteria can now schedule an appointment and get the service they need without leaving the comfort of their home,” said Roslyn Rogers Collins, President and CEO of PPMNJ. “They are assessed and counselled by a clinician in the Virtual Health Center and the medications with instructions are delivered to their door. This is another way to ensure that our patients get the quality care they need and deserve.”
For nearly a century, PPMNJ has been a trusted provider of sexual and reproductive health care. The launch of telehealth medication abortion continues that legacy of innovation and continues to position New Jersey as a state that is expanding access even as abortion care is restricted and attacked across much of the country. Patients here can count on safe, high-quality, and timely care, no matter the political climate elsewhere.
“Our patients are the experts in their own lives,” said Dr. Ena Marsan, Associate Medical Director. “Our role as clinicians is to listen, to provide compassionate, non-judgmental care, and to ensure that every patient has the information and resources they need to make the decisions that are right for them, no matter what. Medication abortion is a safe, effective option for ending a pregnancy, and telehealth expands access to this trusted care."
This expansion reflects PPMNJ’s guiding principle: every patient deserves the power to make decisions that are best for themselves, their families, and their futures. By using technology to connect patients with care, PPMNJ ensures that essential services remain accessible and responsive to community needs — whether delivered in person or online.
“Every day, I see the barriers patients face — from taking time off work, to finding childcare, to traveling long distances,” said Sandra Mercorelli, Director of Navigation Services and Patient Experience. “Telehealth medication abortion removes those obstacles by offering safe, compassionate care delivered right to their door. I’m proud to be part of this project that expands access to abortion and honors patients as the decision-makers in their own lives.”
