PRINCETON, N.J. – Princeton College Democrats President, Sebastian Quiroz, issued the following statement in response to revelations that U.S. Senate Candidate Bob Hugin fought against women’s and LGBT inclusion at Princeton University
“The revelations concerning U.S. Senate candidate Bob Hugin ’76 – that he vigorously fought against women’s inclusion in Princeton University eating clubs and opposed the inclusion of LGBT students – are vile and unfitting of an individual seeking public office. Any individual who demeans another based on their gender or sexual orientation or thwarts inclusion in such fashion needs to be held accountable, regardless of wealth or status.

“As an undergraduate student in the 1970s, Bob Hugin told the Central Jersey Home News that if a member of the Tiger Inn was found to be gay then “he wouldn’t last long.” In the early 1990s, Mr. Hugin litigated for “the right to determine our own membership” as a means to both exclude women from joining Tiger Inn and expel existing members. In 1992, Mr. Hugin referred to the actions of Sally Frank, ’80, who courageously fought for women’s participation in eating clubs, as “politically correct fascism.” Mr. Hugin’s actions and comments, though remarkably immature, were made in his mid-30s after serving seven years in the Marines and earning his MBA degree. Rather than being the outbursts of a petulant, contrarian undergraduate, they reflected the worldview of a grown man who would go on to become a member of the University’s Board of Trustees.

“Mr. Hugin’s troubling behavior has continued into the present day. He made the maximum possible contributions to Donald Trump’s campaign and served as a Trump delegate at the 2016 Republican National Convention. Trump, infamously, has harmed women by advocating against their right to choose and making crude remarks referencing episodes of sexual assault; he has proven himself to be an enemy of the LGBTQ community by banning transgender individuals from serving their country. What’s more, a photo released last month by his campaign with Hugin and his 14 interns notably included no women in sight. Mr. Hugin’s money – earned by price gouging cancer patients for drugs they desperately need – has fueled a backward agenda intended to harm vulnerable communities in our country.”
