Quijano Reintroduces Anti-Wage Theft Bill Bolstering Protections for NJ Employees

Legislation Will Strengthen Laws and Expand Processes for Employees to be Made Whole

            (TRENTON) – Assemblywoman Annette Quijano (D-Union) recently reintroduced legislation strengthening New Jersey’s laws to protect employees from wage theft.

“Wages that are not complete or provided as agreed to under contract or law has detrimental impacts on an employee’s ability to pay rent, keep the lights and heat on, afford medications, and put food on the table for their families,” said Assemblywoman Quijano. “The state must strengthen protections for working- and middle-class families who are being cheated out their wages.”

The bill (A-2903) assists workers aggrieved by certain violations of laws regarding the payment of wages by strengthening enforcement procedures, remedies and a variety of criminal, civil and administrative sanctions against the violators.

“With stronger penalties, we protect workers and discourage wage theft by employers who believe this is a routine business practice,” continued Quijano.

Vetoed by the previous administration, the bill passed both houses of the legislature last session with bi-partisan support.
