Rejecting Politicians Who 'Defunded' Planned Parenthood, Voters Elect Pro-Reproductive Rights House
WASHINGTON, DC — Tonight, voters across the country unseated lawmakers who voted for the disastrous “defunding” of Planned Parenthood health centers, delivering a reproductive rights majority in the U.S. House of Representatives and that can defend against the Trump administration’s reckless agenda. So far Representatives Gabe Evans (CO-08), Rob Bresnahan (PA-08), Ryan McKenzie (PA-07), and Scott Perry (PA-10) have all lost their seats after voting to “defund” Planned Parenthood and take away people’s healthcare.
Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, president & CEO, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:
“All across the country, voters rejected the tyranny of the Trump administration and its backers in Congress. These politicians played politics with our health and our lives by ‘defunding’ Planned Parenthood, and communities held them accountable. We have a long road ahead to restore what this administration tore apart, and we know we've got the fighters on our side to do it."
Reproductive rights are winning up and down the ballot. Virginians voted to enshrine reproductive freedom in their state constitution, and champions Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and Sen.-elect Roy Cooper (D-NC) were elected to the U.S. Senate.
Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations announced a plan to spend $47 million this election cycle. The “We Decide” campaign connected with voters online, at their front doors, and everywhere in between to unseat lawmakers who “defunded” Planned Parenthood; to take power back in key battleground states; and win races to build support for a lasting, durable right to abortion. Canvassers knocked on more than 1.5 million doors and connected with over 460,000 people at their doors and by phone — reaching out to more than 10 million voters ahead of the election.
