WASHINGTON, DC – Last night, U.S. Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) voted to pass the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). This legislation is critical to New Jersey’s 1^st Congressional District which has been battered by storms and tornadoes, including Hurricane Ida in 2021 which cost 29 lives in New Jersey.

“The projects authorized by WRDA are essential to everyday life in South Jersey,” said Congressman Norcross. “Investing in our storm and wastewater management and flood mitigation infrastructure protects our cities, towns, businesses, and homes from being clobbered by powerful storms. I’m proud to support our communities by authorizing these critical environmental projects.”

The bill authorizes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to carry out water resources development projects and studies, including those that improve waterway infrastructure; make South Jersey communities more resilient to flooding; and support the region’s economy and quality of life.

Key WRDA provisions for New Jersey’s 1^st Congressional District include:

• A study to better understand flooding risks and to help flood risk management in Camden and Gloucester counties, including Brooklawn, Bellmawr, Camden City, Gloucester City, Westville, Mt. Ephraim, and Runnemede.
• $119 million for the City of Camden’s outdated combined wastewater and stormwater management infrastructure to reduce overflows and flooding.
• $20 million for the Lower Delaware River Basin, including projects for wastewater treatment and related facilities (such as sewer overflow infrastructure improvements and other stormwater management) in the South Jersey region neighboring the Delaware River Bay and nearby rivers and streams.
