Representative Malinowski Demands House Leadership Prioritize Restoring Full SALT Deduction

Washington, DC – Congressman Tom Malinowski lead a letter signed by twenty-four bi-partisan lawmakers that demands House leadership prioritize the restoration of the full State and Local Tax Deduction (SALT).

The letter, sent to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, outlines the burden the cap placed upon the American middle class. The 2017 GOP tax bill directly targeted states like New Jersey and led to the double-taxing of millions of Americans. According to the IRS there are 860,000 middle class households in New Jersey alone that are directly harmed.

The restoration of the full deduction was an ever-present demand of voters in the midterm election. Middle class taxpayers have now felt the cost of losing the deduction, and seen that what they paid for was a tax cut for millionaires and for corporations, which used their windfall mostly for stock buybacks. Since his swearing in, Congressman Malinowski has supported bipartisan and bicameral legislation like the Stop Attacking Local Taxpayers (SALT) Act of 2019 that would fully remove the SALT cap.

“Since tax season began, many of my constituents have been telling me that they owe thousands more to the government this year than last. For middle class families struggling to make ends meet that is devastating. I will continue to fight to reverse the 2017 tax bill that made New Jersey’s burden even greater, and to bring relief to taxpayers across our state.”
