NEWARK — Retired three-star Army Lieutenant General Mark Hertling, who served in uniform for 38 years, has endorsed Phil Murphy for governor, calling him “the kind of leader this nation and New Jersey needs.”
“Phil Murphy has character, a strong sense of values, an unbelievable presence, and a honed and sharp intellect. He knows how to get things done,” said Hertling. “In the Army, all those things taken together are the measure of leadership. He is the kind of leader we need in government right now.”
Lt. Gen. Hertling was serving as the Commanding General of U.S. Army Europe during the period Phil Murphy was serving as United States Ambassador to Germany. Hertling and Murphy worked together extensively on issues concerning the needs of both soldiers and military families based in that country.
Lt. Gen. Hertling praised Murphy’s character and record of service, specifically noting how Murphy created strong partnerships with German leaders, would frequently visit wounded soldiers being treated in military hospitals, and would make sure military families had all they needed.
Murphy has released a plan to better provide for New Jersey’s more than 430,000 military veterans, including splitting the current Department of Military and Veterans Affairs into two separate departments — ensuring that the needs of active-duty personnel and veterans are both dealt with individually and properly.
“I’m wondering why past governors haven’t already put them in place,” said Hertling of Murphy’s plans. “As governor, you’ll get action, instead of just talk, from Phil Murphy.”
