Ruiz Bills Signed into Law

Trenton – Several pieces of legislation sponsored by Senate President Pro Tempore M. Teresa Ruiz, regarding education and consumer protection, were signed into law today.

“I have spent my time in the Senate working to make New Jersey a better place to live and grow. I have focused on improving our education system, protecting our families, revitalizing our cities and advocating for our state’s most vulnerable,” said Senator Ruiz (D-Essex). “I am encouraged to see so many pieces of legislation become law today that do just that. I am grateful to my colleagues in the Senate and the Assembly who helped me put these bills on the Governor’s desk and thankful he saw the value in signing them into law.”

The following bills were signed into law:

• S.692 – Sponsored by Senator Ruiz and Senator Sarlo, the law prohibits the Department of Education from regulating the maximum salary school districts may pay their superintendent of schools and codifies the standards for contract review.

• S.2653 – Sponsored by Senator Ruiz and Senator Cunningham, the law requires the Department of Education to develop guidelines for school districts concerning child trafficking awareness and prevention.

• S.2994 – Sponsored by Senator Ruiz, the law requires creditors to provide borrowers with a prorated refund of the purchase price following the termination or cancellation of a guaranteed asset protection waiver.

• S.3452 – Sponsored by Senator Ruiz and Senator Pou, the law requires certain consumer reporting agencies to make credit reports available in Spanish and certain other languages.

• S.3899 – Sponsored by Senator Ruiz, the law allows Teachers’ Pension Annuity Fund retirees to be employed as superintendents or administrators for more than two years, without reenrolling in the TPAF system, when it is in the best interest of the school district.
