SABRIN FOR U.S. SENATE ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF STUDENTS FOR SABRIN
Libertarian Party U.S. Senate nominee and Ramapo College finance professor Murray Sabrin announced today the formation of Students for Sabrin, co-chaired by Jessica Matos a Bloomfield high-school senior and Ronel A. Peguero, an undergraduate at NJIT.
Jessica Matos is also the president of her high school Youth and Government Club. She has lived in Bloomfield, New Jersey all her life. Her mother is an immigrant from Ghana, Africa and her father is a first generation Puerto Rican. During her senior year in high school, Matos became aware of the Republican and the Democratic parties reluctance to solve societal issues. In her research to find a suitable political party she came across a party that aims to maximize personal freedoms, the Libertarian Party. She is working to help students become a more engaged electorate and will be working with the Murray Sabrin for U.S. Senate campaign to rally students behind his principles of peace and liberty.
Ronel A. Peguero is a Bloomfield High School Alumni and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. His hometown of Bloomfield, New Jersey has been a supportive community that has prepared Peguero to push beyond his boundaries. As a firstgeneration American growing up in Essex County, the diversity of the town helped Peguero experience a variety of other cultures.
Peguero resides with his mother and grandmother, whom both emigrated from Ecuador in search of financial independence. They fled from Rodrigo Borja Cevallos’ administration, which extended the government’s reach throughout the economy, generating economic uncertainty and discouraging private investment. His father, a political refugee from Cuba, fought against the injustice of Fidel Castro’s communist regime. Peguero’s father escaped after being imprisoned and enduring years of abuse from the Cuban government. They were responsible for the confiscation of his home, sugarcane farm, and livestock stating, “This is not yours, it now belongs to the government.” He rejoiced at the opportunities offered in America after becoming a U.S. resident in 1986. After recovering from a stroke, his father moved to Florida.
Being raised in a family that has experienced the corruption of government has reinforced the importance of liberty in Peguero’s life. More recently, Peguero also realized college campuses have become politically correct indoctrination centers. He experienced this first-hand when a professor at Essex County College accused him of reaping the benefits of “white privilege” despite Peguero being a minority himself. It is unfortunate professors have forsaken higher education to berate students with their political agendas. It has become apparent with the UC Berkeley riots, and constant attacks on students that do not identify with the identity politics found on campuses, that colleges have become intolerant of the free exchange of ideas. For this reason, Peguero became an active member of the New Jersey Libertarian Party. Peguero said “that is an honor to be working with the Murray Sabrin for his U.S. Senate campaign to rally students behind his principles of peace, prosperity, and liberty.”
Sabrin received the Libertarian Party nomination on March 24 at the Party’s convention in New Brunswick. Students for Sabrin will be working with New Jersey students and other local groups to collect signatures and donations to support the campaign.
