Salvation And Social Justice: Public Hearing Use of Force by Police in Elizabeth, 6/6 at 6 pm
The Elizabeth police department uses force at a higher rate than 424 police departments, including the state’s larger cities: Newark, New Brunswick, Pleasantville, Jersey City, and Paterson. Elizabeth Police Director James Cosgrove, who has led that police department since 1998, was forced to resign after an internal inquiry found he used racist and sexist slurs against his own staff. We have heard compelling and powerful testimony from survivors and families crushed by police violence. Voices have been lifted up from Newark and Paterson and now it’s your turn. Before we get to transformation, healing, reconciliation, or forgiveness we must first have truth, repentance, repair and accountability. NJ Advanced Media’s groundbreaking work in the Force Report has given data to justify what African Americans in NJ have known for decades. Racially abusive policing is real and must be abolished. We need to bring the change to the system and not wait for the system to bring change to us.
If you, a family member, or a friend been the victim of the use of force by police anywhere in Union County? If so we want to hear from you.
Join us on Thursday, 6.6.19 at 6 PM as we come to Elizabeth at Mt. Teman AME Church where the Reverend George Britt is the Pastor.
