Senate Approves Corrado Bill Extending Certifications for EMTs and Paramedics
Legislation sponsored by Senator Kristin Corrado that extends EMT and paramedic certifications during a state of emergency was approved by the New Jersey Senate.
“Our EMTs and paramedics are on the front lines every day leading the battle against this pandemic,” said Corrado (R-40). “This bill will allow our first responders to temporarily postpone their recertifications so that they can focus on treating patients and saving lives.”
Under the legislation (S-3189), if the professional certification of an EMT or paramedic is set to expire during a state of emergency or public health emergency, the certification will be extended for a period of six months.
To facilitate the extension, any fees and requirements associated with the certification will be waived. This includes continuing education requirements, refresher course requirements, and clinical training requirements.
“This pandemic has taken a significant physical and mental toll on our first responders,” added Corrado. “Extending their current certification is the least we can do for these heroes who heeded the call and continue to put themselves at risk during our time of need.”
