Senate Panel Meeting Today at 11 AM to Consider Legislation on Sexual Assault, Harassment
TRENTON – The Senate Law and Public Safety Committee will meet today at 11 a.m. to consider eight bills sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg to protect the rights of survivors of sexual assault, improve law enforcement and judicial case management and training, and codify harassment and discrimination policies throughout state government.
The bills grew out of recommendations made to the Weinberg Workgroup on Harassment, Sexual Assault and Misogyny in New Jersey Politics. Senator Weinberg and four members of the panel – Sonia Delgado, Rosa Farias, Julie Roginsky and Patricia Teffenhart – are among those scheduled to testify today.
“These bills aim to remedy the pitfalls in our criminal justice system and workplaces that allow violence and misogyny to continue,” said Senator Weinberg. “These bills would empower survivors to become informed and pursue their rights. They require anti-harassment training for county prosecutors, require each police department to have a designated sexual violence liaison officer and enact other needed reforms throughout law enforcement, the judiciary and state government.”
The Senate Law and Public Safety Committee meeting today at 11 a.m. is a virtual meeting that can be viewed by the press and public as a live proceeding through the legislative website portal here.
