Senate President Scutari Statement on the Passing of Senator Sandra B. Cunningham
TRENTON – Senate President Nick Scutari (D-Union/Somerset) issued the following statement on the passing of former Senator Sandra B. Cunningham:
“Today, New Jersey has lost a generational leader and public servant in Senator Sandra B. Cunningham.
“As Jersey City’s first African-American First Lady, Sandra fought tirelessly for her city and its residents. After the passing of her husband, Glenn, she took up the mantle of leadership in the Senate, carrying forward his legacy of service while forging a legacy all her own.
“Her agenda was built on humanity, equity, and second chances. From expanding access to higher education for low-income students, advancing criminal justice reform through ‘Ban the Box,’ and fighting to restore voting rights for people on parole and probation, she never stopped working to give every New Jerseyan a fair chance to succeed. Her dedication to uplifting communities too often left behind made a lasting impact and serves as an exemplary model of the power of public service.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Senator Cunningham’s family, friends, loved ones, and all who were lucky enough to know and work alongside her. May her passion, grace, fearlessness, and devotion to our residents continue to inspire us all.”
