NEWARK, NJ— Representing the New Jersey Legislative Black Caucus, State Senator Ronald L. Rice (D-Essex) and Assemblyman Jamel Holley (D-Union) are applauding the selection by Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Murphy of Speaker Emeritus and Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver (D-Essex) as his candidate for Lieutenant Governor. Rice and Holley have both served in the legislature with Oliver and they highlighted her decades of public service, dedication to working families and deep knowledge of public policy as reasons why she will make an excellent Lt. Governor.

“Sheila Oliver is the ideal person to balance our ticket and prove that the Democratic Party is who communities of color need to continue to stand with,” said Senator Rice. “I’ve served with Sheila for years and she is one of the most knowledgeable legislators on urban issues and the need to invest in our communities that I have ever come across. I am excited to work with her as our next Lt. Governor to make sure that our community rises together.”

Oliver served as the first female African American Speaker of the General Assembly for two terms. She represents the 34th legislative district.

“With his selection of Sheila Oliver for Lt. Governor, Phil Murphy is making it clear that he is the candidate to represent all of New Jersey,” said Assemblyman Holley. “I’ve known Assemblywoman Oliver for years and I can’t think of anyone better suited to be an advocate for our communities and a champion for working families.”
