Sherrill Statement: House Republicans Pass Tax Bill That Targets the Middle Class in New Jersey
Today House Republicans voted to pass their tax bill that will raise taxes on the middle class in New Jersey, add $1.5 trillion to the national debt, and kick 13 million Americans off of their health care plans. In response to the vote, Democratic candidate for New Jersey’s 11th congressional district Mikie Sherrill released the following statement:
“Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen and the Republicans in Washington have sold out the middle class in New Jersey. Instead of passing a tax plan that lowers taxes on middle-class families and small businesses, this bill forces hard working families in our state to support tax cuts for the ultra wealthy and the largest corporations. This bill will not grow our economy and it will not help our middle-class families in New Jersey.
Congressman Frelinghuysen paved the way for this disastrous tax bill when he voted for it as chairman of the Appropriations Committee, allowing the bill to reach the floor for a vote in the House today. If he had stood up in the beginning and voted no, the people of New Jersey would not be facing this tax hike. There doesn’t seem to be much point in having a member in leadership if they can’t deliver for their constituents.”
More than half of all taxpayers in New Jersey’s 11th congressional district use the state and local tax deductions to lessen their federal tax burden. According to Moody’s, all four counties in the 11th district are among the top twenty counties in the nation that face depreciated values on their homes due to the loss of the SALT deductions. Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen voted in favor of the budget bill that laid the groundwork for the tax bill in the House.
