Senator Singleton Calls On Governor Murphy To Issue Executive Order Prohibiting NJ Resources From Being Used By Feds To Separate Families
(TRENTON)—Senator Troy Singleton (D-Burlington) today called on Governor Phil Murphy to issue an Executive Order that would prohibit the use of New Jersey resources from being used in the federal government’s efforts to separate minors from their parents at the border. The text of the letter is below:
June 19, 2018
Dear Governor Murphy,
I am writing this letter today to respectfully ask that you consider issuing an Executive Order that would prohibit the use of New Jersey resources from being used in the federal government’s unconscionable efforts to separate immigrant children and minors from their parents or guardians.
Most recently, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper issued an Executive Order forbidding state agencies and departments from using their resources to enact President Trump’s policy of dividing families at the southern border. New Jersey should follow suit and do the same. The 2,000 minors who have already been removed from their guardians is 2,000 too many.
Tearing families apart and essentially orphaning children upon their arrival in a foreign land is reprehensible, and New Jersey tax dollars and other resources should not be spent, used or deployed to enact this disgraceful policy.
The deafening silence of so many in government, who refuse to speak and act out against this cruel and inhumane practice will not be lost to the annals of history. As a father and a human being, I hope that you will give all due consideration to this request and demonstrate action on behalf of New Jersey.
Most sincerely,
Hon. Troy Singleton
Senator, 7th District
