For Immediate Release: May 17, 2019

[Somerville, NJ] – Beginning April 2, 2019, the Somerset County Democratic LGBT Caucus contacted all 21 municipalities and the board of Chosen Freeholders to offer to donate a sewn Rainbow Pride Flag to be raised in honor of June being recognized as LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

The Rainbow Pride Flag has represented the LGBTQ+ community since its first design by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978.  Throughout the years many governing bodies, municipalities and houses of worship have adopted resolutions to raise the flag during the month of June in honor of Pride Month in recognition of the LGBTQ+ community.

Caucus Chairperson Charles Eader had this to say, “We are proud of the LGBTQ+ diversity in Somerset County and a warm hearty thank you is extended to Bernardsville, Bound Brook, Franklin Township, Montgomery, North Plainfield, Peapack / Gladstone, Rocky Hill, South Bound Brook and Watchung for taking a stand and bringing awareness to that diversity by raising a flag. We would also like to thank the Borough of Somerville for issuing a proclamation acknowledging June as LGBTQ+ Pride Awareness Month.”

“These municipalities are truly committed to diversity and equality,” stated Somerset County Democratic Committee Chairwoman Peg Schaffer. “Our LGBT Caucus is excited to see Somerset County recognize Pride month and our LGBTQ+ residents as we strive to create a more inclusive community for all.”
