SOMERVILLE, NJ – All Somerset County-operated senior wellness centers, managed by the Office on Aging and Disability Services, are open for in-person programming on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The senior wellness centers continue to offer virtual programs and Grab & Go Lunch service to all older adults.

Older Americans Month 2022

May is Older Americans Month. This year’s theme is “Age My Way,” emphasizing that older adults have individual and unique needs. By planning, participating, making connections and staying involved with their communities, they can remain independent and age in place for as long as possible.

 

Registration for In-Person Programs and Social Distancing

Somerset County continues to follow state-mandated public healthcare guidelines for the safety of its staff and clients. Attendees will be required to register in advance and provide proof of vaccination or show exemption approved by the county. Attendees must wear face masks and maintain social distance.

There will be no virtual or in-person classes/programs on Monday, May 30 (Memorial Day Holiday).

 

Congregate Dining

Somerset County-operated senior centers will offer a nutritionally balanced lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays through March for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 and above. Menu choices include a hot meat-based or meatless entrée or a cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunch. Please make reservations before 10 a.m. on the previous business day.

 

Zoom Guidelines

Unless otherwise specified, residents age 60 and above can join any Zoom programs listed in this schedule even if they are not a client at the host center. Zoom is a secure, video-based, user-friendly, online platform that can be accessed through a smartphone, tablet, or computer that allows residents to see and hear others. Participants can join Zoom meetings through a web browser without downloading any applications or software.

Participants are required to obtain and complete an Activity Release Form from the senior center they regularly attend. After submitting the form to that center, participants will receive an email with information about all Zoom classes and programs listed in this schedule. All programs are FREE for registered members!

May 3, 12 p.m. – “Armchair Travel: Mexico.” Visit Mexico in your mind’s eye. Known as the land of tacos, Aztecs, sombreros and tequila, Mexico is a fascinating country that has epic landscapes, shimmering beaches, lush jungles, snow-capped mountains and cactus-strewn deserts. **This program is hosted by the Warrenbrook Senior Center.**

May 26, 1 p.m. – Rearview Mirror Musical Performance. Have fun at this concert by Rearview Mirror when they will perform country music, rock, pop, Motown, and standard hits from the 1940s to 70s. Tai Chi for Health – Wednesdays, 10 a.m. (March 2 – June 15)Reduce the risk of falls by practicing Tai Chi. Participants will focus on shifting their body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long gesture. Studies have shown that some participants have experienced a reduction in pain, fatigue, and stiffness, and have a greater sense of well-being. **This program can be practiced while either standing or sitting. Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention – Thursdays, 10 a.m. (April 7-July 28). Improve balance, strength, flexibility, and mobility, relieve stress and boost your body’s immune system by practicing a combination of Tai Chi and Sun Tai Chi. In this class, participants will perform a sequence of very slow and controlled movements using both sides of the body with Tai Chi (breathing techniques) and posture poses (Sun Tai Chi). **Registration is required. Scrabble Club – Mondays, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Exercise your vocabulary and crossword skills by enjoying a friendly game of scrabble. If there is sufficient interest the senior centers may host a Scrabble competition.

 

Qigong Practice with Michael – Mondays, 1 p.m. Learn the traditional practice of Qigong a sitting meditation that helps participants coordinate their mind, body and spirit (similar to tai chi). Beginners will learn to practice breathing techniques combined with physical movements until each movement and posture are perfect.

May 9, 11 a.m. – Drum Circle with Dave Miller, EarthMovers Drum Collective. Soothe the mind, body, and spirit when participating in this drumming circle. Learn how to hold a drum and make different tones. During this holistic experience, participants will feel a sense of joy while healing. Drumming will incite self-expression, and deep relaxation, lower blood pressure and reduces stress.

May 20, 11 a.m. – Ukulele Sing-Along with Roberta Foster. Sing along, relax and enjoy an hour of ukulele performance that includes Broadway show tunes and songs from the 40s, 50s and 60s.
