A Statement from the Chair of the NJTARS on the Capitol Riots

As America went through one of its most trialing moments, Abraham Lincoln once said that “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” As The American experiment experienced its first trial during the Civil War, we are reminded that the greatest threat to our union exists from within. “If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves”. Today, our American experiment faced another test, another trial so to speak. As domestic terrorists smashed windows and brought violence to our Capitol, taking over legislative chambers and pushing baseless claims of election fraud, our union faced a trial, a test of whether our democracy can truly survive. This evening, I want to take the time to thank our law enforcement officers to whom we owe a great debt for helping deal with these anti American radical terrorists. I also want to emphasize that these so called “protesters” are not protestors, they’re not rioters, as a matter of fact they’re worse than rioters, they’re terrorists of the worst kind. The kind that threatens to upend the centuries of democracy our Founding Fathers risked their lives to fight for. The kind that threatens our constitution. The kind that threatens the very threads that hold our frail union together. I want to be as clear as possible when I say that the New Jersey Teenage Republicans strongly condemn the violent domestic terrorists that stormed our Capitol today. Violence has no place in politics. I hope that after today, when lawmakers meet to certify the electoral college votes, that lawmakers from both sides of the aisle will realize just how frail our union is, and truly make an effort to regard the other side with compassion and respect, something that does not exist today. Today’s attack is a reminder of the fact that our democracy is vulnerable. After all, America is a republic, if you can keep it.
