Statement from Assembly Speaker Coughlin and Minority Leader DiMaio on the Assassination of Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and the Attempted Assassination of Senator John Hoffman

"We are heartbroken and horrified by the news out of Minnesota of the apparent assassination of Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, and the attempted killings of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife. We are shocked and deeply disturbed by these shootings and the dangerous moment they represent for our country.

"There is no place for violence in our politics. Public servants should not be targeted in their own homes and families should not be caught in the crosshairs of hatred. This latest act of political violence must be a wake-up call for all Americans. We cannot allow fear or extremism to take root in the spaces where dialogue, service, and civic responsibility belong.

"We are in touch with local and state law enforcement and are currently monitoring the situation. We pray for Senator Hoffman and his wife as they recover, for the families of the victims, and for our nation—that we may meet this moment with unity, with decency, and with the unwavering resolve to protect the values that hold us together."
