Today, New Jersey took an important step toward protecting renters with the signing of the Forbidding the Algorithmic Inflation of Rent (FAIR) Act. This legislation prohibits the use of algorithmic rent-setting software that relies on competitors’ private pricing data to artificially inflate rental prices, helping to promote a fairer, more transparent, and competitive housing market.

For the residents of Jersey City, Bayonne, and Kearny, where housing affordability remains one of the greatest challenges facing working families, seniors, young professionals, and first-time renters, this legislation provides an important safeguard against unfair pricing practices.

While the FAIR Act is not a complete solution to our state’s housing affordability crisis, it is a meaningful step toward increasing transparency, promoting fair competition, and protecting renters from practices that can place additional financial burdens on New Jersey residents.

I commend Governor Mikie Sherrill and my colleagues in the Legislature for advancing this important measure.
