Statement of Acting Attorney General Angela Cai Regarding Inaccurate Statements About Division of Law Elections Counsel

"Recent claims by alleged anonymous sources against Assistant Attorney General Susan Scott, a dedicated career public servant, are simply incorrect. For example, letters informing voters of their party registration change and the legal consequences of that change have been issued in the regular course for decades, under various administrations and leadership and prior to AAG Scott’s promotion to her current position. In fact, they are required by state regulation, not AAG Scott. Moreover, no attorney in our office would take the position that a voter cannot appeal to a judge; in fact, hundreds of Division of Law attorneys appear in court during each election. And the role of the attorneys in the Department of Law and Public Safety’s Division of Law is to counsel clients on the laws and regulations of our State, not to make policy decisions for public officials.

AAG Scott is a devoted public servant and has served as legal counsel for the State and many client institutions of the Division of Law for twenty years. Throughout her tenure and in her various roles with the Division, including her current role as legal counsel to the Division’s State and County elections clients, she has acted with utmost professionalism and integrity. I am incredibly grateful for AAG Scott’s tremendous skill, leadership, and significant contributions to the Division. Our clients benefit on a daily basis from her keen legal counsel and tireless work ethic."
