Statements of Support for State Treasurer Nominee Assemblywoman Elizabeth Muoio

Trenton — Governor-elect Phil Murphy today announced the nomination of Assemblywoman Liz Muoio to the position of State Treasurer. Assemblywoman Muoio would be only the second woman confirmed by the Senate as New Jersey State Treasurer – a position that has been in existence since 1776. This is Governor-elect Murphy’s second cabinet nomination.

The New Jersey State Troopers Associations applaud Governor-elect Phil Murphy’s nomination of Assemblywoman Elizabeth Maher Muoio for State Treasurer. The responsibilities of crafting the annual budget and the constitutional requirements of government to properly serve its citizens and its employees cannot be taken lightly. Another fine addition to the Governor Murphy Cabinet.

New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce President Tom Bracken

“The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce congratulates Governor-Elect Phil Murphy for his nomination of Elizabeth Muoio as state treasurer.

Assemblywoman Muoio has served with distinction on the State Assembly’s Budget and Economic Development Committees and as Mercer County’s Director of Economic Development and Sustainability.

We believe Assemblywoman Muoio’s experience in economic development and her knowledge of the state’s finances combined with her strong business background will serve her well in this new capacity.

The NJ Chamber stands ready to work with Assemblywoman Muoio and with the new administration to help improve New Jersey’s economy and make our state more competitive and more affordable.”

New Jersey State Firemen’s Mutual Benevolent Association President Ed Donnelly

“With his first two Cabinet appointments Governor-Elect Murphy has shown that he’s picking serious people for serious positions.

Assemblywoman Liz Muoio has a long career in public service, she has committed herself to doing the work of the people.

The position she has been picked to fill is a critical one, especially after eight years of financial mismanagement and fiscal imprudence at the hands of our outgoing governor.

The New Jersey State FMBA, and our more than 5,000 firefighters, EMTs and dispatchers look forward to working with her to finally fulfill our efforts to secure the pension system, protecting the retirement security and the investments our members have made throughout their careers.”

New Jersey Education Association President Marie Blistan

“Assemblywoman Muoio is a talented and successful leader who will help guide New Jersey through the many fiscal challenges that the Murphy administration will inherit on January 16. As a legislator, she has proven herself to be a champion of New Jersey families and working people, as well as a staunch supporter of public education. Because of that, she twice earned our members’ endorsement and we are confident she will carry those same values and priorities into her new position. As treasurer, she will play a key role in helping the Murphy administration implement its progressive fiscal agenda, which is focused on the wellbeing on all New Jersey residents, not just a select few. In selecting Assemblywoman Muoio, Gov.-elect Murphy has continued to fulfill his promise to assemble a diverse and talented administration that reflects the best of New Jersey.”

Communication Workers of America New Jersey Director Hetty Rosenstein

“After eight years of regressive and misguided policies from Governor Christie, the next Treasury Commissioner will face many challenges in reversing course and getting New Jersey back on the right track. We are extremely happy to see Governor-elect Murphy appoint Assembly member Liz Muoio to helm the state’s finances. Her thoughtful approach to public service will serve our state well. We look forward to a swift confirmation process and working with her as Commissioner.”

Senator Richard J. Codey

“Elizabeth Muoio is a fantastic selection for Treasurer by Governor-elect Murphy. Liz brings integrity, a deep knowledge of proven practices to spur economic development and a keen understanding of state government. Liz’s ability to forge friendships on both sides of the aisle over the years shows her commitment to sound policy over partisanship. I have no doubt that New Jersey is going to be in good hands.”

State Senator Paul Sarlo

“This is an excellent selection. Liz Muoio is a smart, hard-working public official with a diverse and distinguished record of success as a legislator serving on the Assembly Budget Committee, the economic development director for Mercer County, the Mercer County Board of Freeholders and Pennington Borough Council. Her experience provides a breadth of knowledge and a wise perspective as State Treasurer.

“She possesses a working understanding of the interrelationship of finances among the different levels of government and its impact on the lives and livelihoods of the residents of New Jersey.  Her experience as chair of the Mercer County Democratic Party equips her with added political skills that are so important in moving effective policies forward.

“New Jersey is confronted with many fiscal and economic challenges that will have a real-life impact on the financial wellbeing of middle class families, including the consequences of the federal tax plan on state finances, local property taxes and our ability to make wise investments that grow the economy. I look forward to working with Liz to meet these challenges, to effectively manage the state budget, to protect affordability for the residents of New Jersey and to promote economic growth.”

Mercer County Federation of Democratic Women

The Mercer County Federation of Democratic Women and the Women’s Caucus of the Mercer County Democratic Party are extremely proud to congratulate Assemblywoman Elizabeth Maher Muoio on her Nomination to State Treasurer by Governor-Elect Phil Murphy.  Quite simply, there could not have been a better choice.  Assemblywoman Maher Muoio is a leader in the Legislature on economic and budget issues and a champion on matters facing women and families in our great State.  She, along with Governor-Elect Murphy, will stand as a bulwark against the damaging economic and tax policies of D.C.

NJDSC Women’s Caucus Co-Chairs Laura Matos and Grace Strom Power

“The New Jersey Democratic State Committee Women’s Caucus applauds Governor-elect Murphy’s naming of Assemblywoman Elizabeth Maher Muoio to serve as New Jersey’s next State Treasurer. Assemblywoman Muoio’s extensive qualifications include her tenure on the Assembly Budget Committee, her long and accomplished career in economic development, and her advocacy for New Jersey’s working families. Her appointment is particularly historic as she will be the first female Democratic State Treasurer nominee to receive consideration by the State Senate.”

Women for Progress

Today is a day for celebration across the nation. In addition to the Doug Jones victory in AL, here in New Jersey, we are making history. We are thrilled for Assemblywoman Liz Muoio, who would be the first Democratic women to be confirmed by the Senate to hold the position of Treasurer. We can’t wait to see what she will accomplish. Thank you, Governor-Elect, for continuing to help women break the glass ceiling in New Jersey politics!

National Organization for Women of NJ President Deb Huber

I am delighted to hear that Asw Elizabeth Muoio has been nominated to be the state treasurer under the Murphy administration. I expect her feminist beliefs to be reflected in the budget she develops. Her experience leading economic development in Mercer County will be a great asset in fulfilling this effort. I love seeing women who earn highly visible leadership roles in our society. I urge our legislature to confirm her nomination and to give her their support in performing this challenging job.

Center for American Women and Politics

Here at the nonpartisan Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, we monitor and analyze the trends for women in elective and appointive office both nationally and in NJ. As part of that work, we have been convening the Bipartisan Coalition for Women’s Appointments since 1981 in order to encourage the incoming governors of both parties to include women in their new administrations. With today’s announcement of Assemblywoman Liz Muoio as State Treasurer, we note that the Murphy administration is off to a strong start in appointing a diverse Cabinet. It is particularly notable that Muoio would be the first Democratic woman to hold this position and only the second woman to serve as state treasurer (In addition, another Democrat, Michellene Davis served as acting Treasurer in 2007). With three Cabinet appointments announced (Treasurer, Community Affairs and Attorney General) we are pleased that two of the three are women and two of the three are people of color.
