Statewide GOTV Effort Launched by LUPE PAC and
UnidosUS Action Fund to Mobilize Latinas to Vote in New Jersey
#LatinasVoteNJ
CALIFON, NJ – October 30, 2018 – LUPE PAC and UnidosUS Action Fund today kick-off a statewide effort to mobilize Latinas to vote on Tuesday, November 6th to help to re-elect U.S. Senator Robert Menendez. In a series of digital GOTV videos featuring the Hon. Wilda Diaz, Mayor of Perth Amboy; Giovanna Casteneda, New Jersey student advocate; and Claribel Cortez, New Jersey community leader. LUPE PAC and UnidosUS Action Fund urge Latinas to engage in this election to vote and encourage their family members to vote.
“The women of LUPE PAC are mobilizing Latinas to vote because we know what is at stake in this election; our right to choose and have access to reproductive healthcare choices, decent jobs for women with sick pay and equal pay, investment in higher education so our kids can reduce their student debt,” says Patricia Campos-Medina, President of LUPE PAC. “We do not need another greedy millionaire in Washington, D.C. to agree with Trump on critical issues impacting Latinas in New Jersey. On Election Day, Latinas in New Jersey will vote to re-elect Senator Bob Menendez because he is the true champion for New Jerseyans. He will stand-up to Trump on our behalf.”
UnidosUS Action Fund, a nationwide Latino advocacy organization that works to expand the influence and political power of the Latino community, partnered up with LUPE PAC in September when they announced the endorsement to re-elect Senator Bob Menendez. “Our President’s anti-Latino rhetoric is having a negative effect on Latinas and their families, says Rafael Collazo, Political Director of UnidosUS Action Fund. “Latinas are faced with numerous challenges, including equal pay for equal work, fair access to reproductive healthcare, and long-term economic opportunities. With the help of LUPE PAC, we are going to give this important voting bloc the voice they deserve and work to increase their participation in the upcoming Nov. 6 midterm elections.”
According to the Pew Hispanic Research Center, the total Latino population in NJ is 20%, and the total percentage of Latinos who are registered to vote is 12%. Almost 7% of those voters are Latinas. Research by the NALEO Educational Fund reveals that when Latinas vote, the rest of their families vote. “Focusing on mobilizing Latinas is critical to making sure everyone votes,” states Campos-Medina. “We are usually the ones who encourage our kids, our husbands and our parents to go out and vote. So, with this campaign, our goal is to focus on Latino families by specifically targeting Latinas.”
The digital campaign will be promoted via social media. The public can help by sharing the videos and encouraging other Latinos to pledge to vote on Election Day. The campaign can be followed on Facebook via the LUPE PAC page and or using the hashtag #LatinasVoteNJ. For more information and to make the pledge to vote, visit www.lupepac.org.
