Sweeney-Diegnan Resolution Designating April ‘Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month’ Signed By Governor

TRENTON – Senate President Steve Sweeney and Senator Patrick Diegnan issued the following statements after the Governor enacted the resolution they sponsored designating April “Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month:”

“We are honoring the vital and lasting contributions the Sikh community has made to New Jersey,” said Senator Sweeney. “Sikhism is a religion rooted in the belief that every person is equal, regardless of race, gender, sex, or creed. These are admirable principles that are a positive force for social justice that we can all value and respect.”

“The religion’s central principles of truthful living, service to humanity, and devotion to God also inspire its believers to create inclusive communities where all people are respected,” said Senator Diegnan. “Their practices also empower women and help to combat oppression and injustice. The Sikh community in New Jersey embodies the sense of public service that underlies this country’s founding principles.”
