Sweeney & Diegnan Resolutions Honoring The Sikh Community
Recognize The Values of Sikhism & Contributions of the Sikh Community
TRENTON – Honoring the lasting contributions of the Sikh community in New Jersey and worldwide, the Senate endorsed resolutions sponsored by Senate President Steve Sweeney and Senator Patrick Diegnan designating April 14th each year as “Sikh Day” and April as “Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month.”
One resolution, SJR-57, urges public officials and citizens of New Jersey to observe the day with appropriate activities and programs. The companion resolution, SJR-58, designates April of every year Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month.
Founded by the Guru Nanak in the 15th century, Sikhism is the world’s fifth largest religion with nearly 30 million adherents, including roughly 500,000 in the Unites States.
“Sikhism is a religion rooted in the belief that every person is equal, regardless of race, gender, sex, or creed,” said Senator Sweeney. “These are admirable principles that are a positive force for social justice that we can all respect.”
The Sikh community celebrates Vaisakhi on the first day of the month of Vaisakh in the Sikh calendar, which occurs in April. Vaisakhi is a special occasion for Sikhs to remember the founding in 1699 of the Khalsa Panth, a fellowship of devout supporters that played an important role in shaping the religion’s history and identity. The people of New Jersey should celebrate Vaisakhi alongside Sikhs throughout the world and honor the lasting contributions of the Sikh community in New Jersey, said Senator Diegnan.
“The religion’s central principles of truthful living, service to humanity, and devotion to God also inspire its believers to create inclusive communities where all people are respected,” said Senator Diegnan. “Their practices also empower women and help to combat oppression and injustice. The Sikh community in New Jersey embodies the sense of public service that underlies this country’s founding principles.”
