Sweeney Hails Democrats’ Successful Election Results
Welcomes Approval of School Bond Act
Trenton – Senate President Steve Sweeney issued the following statement on the results of the 2018 election:
“This is one of the most consequential elections in our time and Democrats in New Jersey have achieved significant victories that helped Democrats take control of the House of Representatives. The ‘blue wave’ that generated heavy voter turnout in states across the country produced deep blue Democratic success stories in New Jersey.
“I want to congratulate Senator Menendez, the seven Democratic members of the House from New Jersey who were reelected and the three Democrats who won in districts long held by Republicans. Congressman-elect Van Drew, Congressman-elect Malinowski and Congresswoman-elect Sherrill all waged effective campaigns focused on the issues of importance to the people of New Jersey, winning hard-fought victories at a pivotal time for the country. And Andy Kim waged a formidable campaign that puts him in position for a potential victory, adding to the strength of our congressional delegation.
“Democrats will now have an influential seat at the table in Washington on issues that have a direct impact on New Jersey’s quality of life, including access to affordable health care, infrastructure improvements and tax policies. They will be a formidable team that will be empowered to prevent the formerly all-Republican Congress from taking actions that punish states like New Jersey.
“I welcome the voters’ approval of the bond act that will provide the resources to expand vocational education, make sure that schools have clean drinking water and enhance security in schools throughout the state. This is an investment in the health, safety and opportunities of our school children and their future.
“I also want to congratulate Senator Joe Lagana for his election victory in the 38th Legislative District, the nine Democrats elected to the Assembly and the many Democrats elected to local office across the state and those who ran but did not win at the ballot box. Everyone’s participation made a contribution in an election of importance to our future.”
