Trenton – Senate President Steve Sweeney traveled to Bergen County today where he joined Senate Majority Leader Senator Leader Loretta Weinberg in speaking with the constituents, business leaders and public officials in the 37th legislative district. Together, they met with school district superintendents, administrators from four different hospitals and a number of mayors and councilmembers from within the district.

“No matter what county I visit, I am hearing the same issues,” said Senator Sweeney (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland). “New Jersey is facing a fiscal crisis, the effects of which are felt in all corners of this state, and I appreciate the Senate Majority Leader’s invitation to meet with the people she represents. Senator Weinberg has been an unwavering advocate for civil rights, pay equity, NJ Transit reform and the people of district 37. I have the utmost admiration for the Senator and all that she has accomplished for her district and the state of New Jersey.”

Senator Sweeney joined Senator Weinberg in a meeting with school superintendents of Fort Lee, Teaneck, Palisades Park, Englewood City, and Leonia where they discussed school funding and the Path to Progress initiative.

Senator Sweeney and Senator Weinberg then met with Senator Sarlo and Senator Lagana. The legislators were joined by administrators from the Holy Name Medical Center, Valley Hospital, Hackensack University Medical Center and Englewood Hospital & Medical Center.

Lastly, the Senators Sweeney and Weinberg met with mayors and councilmembers from district 37 to discuss local issues they are facing in their communities. They were joined by: Fort Lee Council President Peter Suh, Englewood Mayor Michael Wildes, Englewood Councilman Charles Cobb, Closter Councilman Scott Devlin, Tenafly Councilman Venugopal Menon, Teaneck School Board Member Victoria Fischer, Teaneck Councilwoman Gervonn Romney Rice, Alpine Mayor Paul Tomasko, Leonia Police Chief and Business Administrator Thomas Rowe, Bogota Councilwoman Consuelo Carpenter.

Senator Weinberg has represented New Jersey’s 37th Legislative District since 2005 and has been the Senate Majority Leader since 2012. The 37th district covers the Bergen County municipalities of Alpine, Bogota, Cresskill, Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, Fort Lee, Hackensack, Leonia, Northvale, Palisades Park, Rockleigh, Teaneck and Tenafly.

In 2010, the census reported the population of district’s population was 221,026.
