Sweeney Speaks at the All American Sports Betting Summit

Trenton – Senate President Steve Sweeney addressed the attendees at the inaugural All America Sports Betting Summit at the Monmouth Park Race Track today. The event is a two day sports betting conference put on by Eventus International.

The conference is meant to help gaming sector professionals understand state regulations, create a responsible gaming environment, and open up the market to the game-changing technological innovations, marketing strategies and networking opportunities.

“The hard fought effort to bring sports betting to New Jersey is paying off,” said Senator Sweeney (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland). “In just a year, this sector has become an unqualified success by bringing renewed economic vitality to the state’s gaming industry. We have capitalized on a new sector of sports gaming that is creating new jobs, generating economic activity and providing a boost to the casinos and the horse racing industry. We will continue to keep New Jersey a leader in sports betting, the gaming sector and tourism with thriving industries that produce benefits for the entire state.”

After legalizing sports betting last year in 2018, New Jersey has become the second largest sports betting market in the county, behind only Nevada. Since mid-May of last year, roughly $2.6 billion was wagered statewide, and $2.5 billion has been paid out in winning tickets.

Other participants at the conference included Governor Phil Murphy, Congressman Frank Pallone and former New Jersey State Senator Raymond Lesniak, among others.

“It was a long journey that took the determination and support I got every step of the way from Senate President Sweeney to overturn the federal ban on sports betting. Now everyone can see why it was all worth it,” said former Senator Ray Lesniak, “Atlantic City casinos, Monmouth Park and The Meadowlands racetracks are reaping the benefits as New Jersey closes in and will soon surpass Nevada in gaming revenue.”
