Sweeney’s Statement Marking Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day
TRENTON – Senate President Steve Sweeney issued the following statement today in commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day:
“Today is a solemn reminder of the horror of the Holocaust. Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom Hashoah, also reminds us of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the valiant Jewish revolt against the brutal tyranny of the Nazis in April of 1943.
“We remember the Warsaw Uprising not because the Jews remaining in the ghetto who fought against deportation to death camps beat back literal forces, but because their righteous stand against evil was – and remains – a victory of the human spirit. We cannot forget that lesson. Their lives and their deaths mattered. We must never shrink from fighting anti-Semitism in any of its ugly forms; that is as true today as it was 75 years ago.”
Six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust.
