The Rev. Dr. William J. Barber Keynotes “Moral Resistance” Rally In Trenton, And Calls On Moral Activists In New Jersey To Advance A “Moral Public Policy Agenda”

TRENTON – On Thursday, March 9 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. ET the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, president and senior lecture of Repairers of the Breach and pastor of Greenleaf Christian Church, will attend and keynote a “Moral Resistance” rally at Shiloh Baptist Church, 340 Rev S Howard Woodson Jr Way. Rev. Barber, who is also the architect of the Moral Mondays movement in North Carolina, will speak alongside New Jersey interfaith leaders, union members and other moral activists working for education access, economic, and environmental justice.

The rally is being hosted and coordinated by the New Jersey branch of the Communications Workers of America Union (CWA). CWA represents over 700,000 workers in private and public sector employment in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

Through Repairers of the Breach, Rev. Barber helps to build and support state-based “moral movements” across the United States and enlists moral activists in the fight against systemic racism, poverty, child poverty, extremism, denial of healthcare, voter suppression, environmental injustice, xenophobia, unchecked militarism, discriminiation towards LGBTQ people, sexism, and our current moment in history.

Last week Rev. Barber was invited to help lead the commemoration of the 52nd anniversary of “Bloody Sunday” in Selma, AL where he encouraged moral activists to challenge voter suppression and to advance a moral public policy agenda in Alabama. This included challenging Alabama’s Secretary of State John Merrill, who promoted the state’s dangerous voter suppression laws on the pulpit of the historic Brown Chapel AME. As reported by the Associated Press, Rev. Barber, along with nearly two dozen patrons walked out of the worship service, noting the church’s history as a field hospital for citizens whose skulls were cracked open by extremist on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, because they were marching for voting rights.

Rev. Barber regularly speaks about the need to advance a moral public policy agenda, including a major speech last summer at the 2016 Democratic National Convention.
