Makeovers, and Health Education
(TRENTON) – Women suffering from health-related hair loss received a complimentary wig Monday as part of “Covered with Compassion”— a wig giveaway sponsored by Assemblywoman Britnee N. Timberlake (D-Essex, Passaic), in partnership with Susan G. Komen North Jersey, East Orange General Hospital, City of East Orange Division of Senior Services, University Hospital, and the Montclair Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at the East Orange Senior Center.
“Today, in my heart, is dedicated to my grandmother, who lost her battle with breast cancer,” said Timberlake. “Today is a day for all women. If we can help at least one woman feel better and know that she is cared about, then we have achieved our goal.”
“Whether it’s hair loss because of a medical condition, such as alopecia areata, or chemotherapy to treat cancer, experiencing hair loss can be extremely frustrating,” she added. “Dealing with a health issue is already stressful physically and emotionally. Those issues, combined with the changes in appearance such as hair loss, can make the illness even more overwhelming. Our hope with ‘Covered with Compassion’ was to provide women with a wig and other resources that can provide them with some comfort.”
Participants also worked with a stylist, and received massage therapy, nutrition and health education, beauty makeovers, and free refreshments.
