Weinberg Calls for the Resignation of Bergen Sheriff Saudino

TRENTON – Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg issued the following statement today calling for the resignation of Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino:

“The racist, homophobic and derogatory words employed by Sheriff Saudino are a highly-offensive assault on the principles of respect and decency that are a vital part of American society. They cannot be excused, condoned or accepted. As a high-ranking law enforcement official in Bergen County, Sheriff Saudino has done an injustice to the standards of conduct that are required of public officials and a disservice to the men and women who serve with honor in law enforcement.

“Mr. Saudino should resign from his position immediately.

“At a time of increasing insults and attacks based on race, religion and sexual orientation in the country, we cannot allow this type of behavior to go unchallenged or unchecked. Words matter, and the language he used to denigrate others will only perpetuate the strains of prejudice and hatred that are so divisive. We are better than this and it is important that we demonstrate our commitment to equality, inclusiveness and respect for all of our fellow citizens by having Mr. Saudino remove himself from public office.”
