William Cunningham, Candidate for Congress, Pledges to Tackle Corruption in Washington and Put ‘We the People’ First
NEW JERSEY — William Cunningham, candidate for U.S. House of Representatives in New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District, signed the American Promise Candidate Pledge to end the influence of big money and special interests in campaigns and elections. Cunningham pledged, if elected, to use the office to advance an amendment to the U. S. Constitution to “secure fair, free elections by limiting the undue influence of money in politics; protect the rights of all Americans to equal participation and representation rather than the over representation of donors and special interests; and protect the unalienable liberty of people rather than new privileges for the largest corporations, unions, and special interests.”
“For over eight years corporations and the wealthiest individuals in the country have been granted outsized influence in our democracy due to the blatantly unjust Citizens United decision. It must be overturned,” said Will Cunningham, candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s Second District. “A campaign finance system that honors the integrity of our constitutional principles should be a priority for anyone currently in or seeking office. If elected, I’ll fight to restore the electoral system to the people it was built to protect – everyday citizens, not billion-dollar corporations hiding behind shadowy Super PACs. I’m proud to join American Promise’s pledge to do just that.”
Citizen leaders from Allied for American Promise located in South Jersey have asked five of the seven declared candidates in the race — Republicans and Democrats — to sign the pledge. To date, 60 federal candidates across the country have signed the pledge.
“The need for an amendment to curb the excesses of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision is extremely important and we feel that our successes will be a series of small steps towards that end . Having Will Cunningham sign the pledge is a nice first step and hopefully we’ll be able to convince other candidates to follow suit. We look forward to the day when final and total success is achieved,” says Tom Huck, member of Allied for American Promise located in South Jersey.
“If there is anything that can unite and empower the American people to restore our democracy, it is the American Promise’s goal of passage of the 28th Amendment,” says Jeanne Doremus, member of Allied for American Promise located in South Jersey.
Americans overwhelmingly support curbing the undue influence of money in our elections. 19 states and over 800 cities and towns have passed resolutions with support from Republicans, Democrats, and independents formally calling on Congress to amend the U.S. Constitution to limit the influence of money in politics. In Montana, Colorado, California, and Washington voters have approved similar resolutions through ballot initiatives. Multiple versions of amendments have been proposed in Congress, with more than 40 co-sponsors in the U.S. Senate and 150 co-sponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives.
