Wisniewski Condemns Elizabeth ICE Raids
SAYREVILLE, N.J. – Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-Sayreville) released the following statement in reaction to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Elizabeth, NJ:

“The raids by ICE this weekend in Elizabeth show that New Jersey is not immune from the immoral policies of the Trump Administration. It is time for all of New Jersey to stand up to the Trump regime in support of our friends and neighbors. We must recognize the great contributions that immigrants bring to New Jersey and offer them our support and protection.

“On Presidents’ Day, when we remember the great leaders of our nation’s past, it is important to reflect on the values and ideals that these giants pursued for a nation founded by immigrants. President Trump would do well to follow their lead and stop practicing the divisive politics that are tearing the nation apart.

“New Jersey — and our nation — is better served if President Trump stops targeting our neighbors on the basis of what they believe and where they are from. This nation is better than that.”

Assemblyman Wisniewski has sponsored a bill to make New Jersey a “Sanctuary State” by prohibiting law enforcement from using state resources to investigate, interrogate, detain, or arrest anyone for immigration enforcement reasons.

It prevents state law enforcement officers from cooperating with federal officers on immigration issues. The legislation also creates new data retention policies for schools and health care providers to prevent the federal government from being able to access individuals’ immigration status.
