AFT New Jersey’s largest governing body passes resolution denouncing actions of immigration enforcement officers nationwide

Fords, N.J.: In the wake of another unjustified killing by federal agents in Minneapolis this month, the Delegate Assembly of the American Federation of Teachers New Jersey on Jan. 26 overwhelmingly passed a resolution denouncing the actions of immigration enforcement officers in Minnesota and
throughout the country.

As we have witnessed the violent lawlessness of masked, unidentifiable agents, AFTNJ’s largest governing body reaffirmed its support for free speech, due process, safe schools and communities, and accountability for those who we entrust to enforce our laws. AFTNJ pledged its support and solidarity with those exercising their constitutionally protected right to free speech in the face of this rising tide of authoritarianism.

“We cannot sit idly by as this administration erodes our rights, invades our communities and attacks our neighbors,” AFTNJ President Jennifer S. Higgins said Jan. 27. “This resolution is not only a statement of our union’s position but a call to action. The labor movement must continue its long tradition of fighting for the rights of all working people and their families when confronted with those who want to impose fear, silence us and bring chaos into our communities.”
