AG’s Office Investigating Police-Involved Fatal Shooting in Piscataway, N.J.

TRENTON The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on Monday, January 5, 2026, in Piscataway Township in Middlesex County, New Jersey.

According to preliminary information, officers from the Piscataway Police Department responded to a residence on River Road at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Monday after receiving a 911 call from a man reporting that an individual had a knife. Officers subsequently shot and killed a man armed with a knife who they encountered at the residence.

After the shooting, the officers discovered three additional deceased people in the home. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating their deaths.

The identities of the civilians and officers involved are not being released at this time.

A 2019 law, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), requires the Attorney General’s Office to conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody. It requires that all such investigations be presented to a grand jury to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.
