Analilia Mejia Joins Vigil in Bloomfield to Honor Renee Good, Visits Delaney Hall to Meet with Families
After visiting Delaney Hall in Newark on Saturday morning, congressional candidate Analilia Mejia joined immigrants’ rights advocates, faith leaders, and community members at a vigil for Renee Good in Bloomfield
Bloomfield, NJ — Community members, faith leaders, and immigrants’ rights advocates gathered at Bloomfield Station Plaza on Saturday evening for a vigil honoring Renee Good after she was brutally murdered by ICE in Minneapolis.
“Renee Good should still be alive right now. It’s not lost on me that this could have happened to any one of us protesting ICE. This has to be a wake up call for the rest of the country,” said Analilia Mejia to the crowd in downtown Bloomfield. “We have to stick together and have each other's backs. These are hard times, but we will get through it together, in community, and in action.”
The ICE Out for Good vigil included a moment of silence, prayer, poetry, and community testimony. Attendees held candles as speakers called for accountability and an end to the Trump administration terrorizing immigrant communities and blue states.
Congressional candidate Analilia Mejia spoke at the vigil after visiting the Delaney Hall ICE detention center earlier in the day, where she met with family members waiting outside in the cold to see their detained loved ones.
“I spent this morning at Delaney Hall talking with families who are terrified for their loved ones inside. They told me about the terrible conditions and about how they fear for their family members' health and safety. I met a father who brought his two young children to say goodbye to their mom because she’s getting deported to Venezuela tomorrow. It breaks my heart,” said Analilia Mejia. "We are witnessing a rogue president wage war on his own country, terrorizing communities and tearing families apart. We have to use every bit of power and leverage we have to fight back."
The vigil, organized by Make the Road Action New Jersey, drew residents from across the district who shared stories of how expanded immigration enforcement has affected their communities.
Mejia, the former director of the New Jersey Working Families Party and a longtime labor organizer, has previously called to Abolish ICE, close Delaney Hall, and hold ICE officers accountable for their misconduct and abuse.
