“Are You Going to Hell?” McIver Lays Into Top ICE Official on Agency Conduct

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In case you missed it, today, during a Homeland Security Committee hearing, Congresswoman LaMonica McIver (NJ-10) questioned Todd Lyons, Acting Director of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), about the agency’s despicable conduct and ongoing refusal to accept oversight.

During the hearing, McIver asked Lyons whether his religious values and morals aligned with the conduct of the agency he leads, asking, “do you think you’re going to hell, Mr. Lyons?”

McIver’s role in the hearing was previewed by POLITICO Playbook this morning, with the newsletter calling McIver “one of the most interesting Dems to watch on the committee, given one of her previous attempts at ICE oversight ended in federal charges being brought against her.” In her conversation with Playbook, McIver also “drew a direct line from her Delaney Hall visits to today’s hearing—and from the high-profile killings in Minnesota to conditions at detention facilities.”

At the hearing, McIver brought up the administration’s efforts to criminalize oversight and the importance of accountability, especially with regard to the death of Jean Wilson Brutus, a Haitian immigrant, detained at Delaney Hall in McIver’s district, who died in ICE custody. McIver also spoke about the killings of Keith Porter Jr., a Black American citizen, killed by an off-duty ICE agent on New Year’s Eve, and Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
