Assemblywoman Reynolds-Jackson Outraged by Today's SCOTUS Decision

Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Louisiana v. Callais:
“I am outraged by today's Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais. The strength of America’s democracy is built on the notion that every citizen has a right to have their voice heard, and the ballot box is one of the most fundamental ways to do that. This decision by SCOTUS weakens the Voting Rights Act of 1965 at the very moment in time when we should be broadening access to the polls for American citizens across the country and making it easier for people to fulfill their right to cast their ballots. The decision today is a direct threat to democracy and will lead to more racial discrimination in the election process.
"Today’s decision is in direct opposition to efforts by Assembly Democrats to expand voting rights in New Jersey, as evidenced by the Assembly's recent passage of my bill, the John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act of New Jersey (Bill A1715). The Supreme Court's action underscores the importance of making sure my bill is signed into law."
