Booker Condemns DHS Purchase of New ICE Detention Facility in Roxbury

| Today, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement condemning DHS’ purchase of a proposed detention facility in Roxbury, NJ:
“ICE’s most recent purchase of a warehouse in Roxbury to use as a detention center is an affront to the Roxbury community who resoundingly rejected the prospect of a facility weeks ago. I joined them in this call, expressing my clear and unequivocal opposition to the construction, conversion, or opening of any more immigration detention centers in New Jersey. These facilities have no place in our communities. “ICE is acting with impunity, and the private contractors they rely on to operate detention centers are neither effective nor good-faith partners. Instead of addressing the rising cost of groceries, housing, health care, and childcare crushing New Jersey families, President Trump and Congressional Republicans chose to spend millions of dollars expanding a detention system that has no place in New Jersey. President Trump is choosing to invest in the mass warehousing of human beings, allowing a select few to profit from the cruel detention of our neighbors. “Our communities deserve an immigration system rooted in fairness, accountability, and respect for basic human dignity—not one that expands detention capacity in industrial spaces ill-suited for humane treatment. We have a responsibility to continue organizing and standing against this administration at every turn, and I will continue to use every tool available to me in Congress to demand an immigration system that is just. This will not be the last word from Roxbury or New Jersey.” ### |
